Welcome to the official website of Madeleine E. Vaughan
Author of The Harmatia Cycle and the upcoming Kestrel Saga series
Madeleine E. Vaughan is an Anglo-French author from the United Kingdom, who writes New Adult, Young Adult and Children’s fantasy. Head writer and one of the founding members of the Hampshire-based gaming studio Enigmatic Studios, she also lectures in Creative Writing at the University of Winchester.
A keen lover of mythology and the macabre, Madeleine’s nomadic upbringing has brought her in contact with a wide collection of vibrant cultures and gruesome folklore from across the world, which has influenced her writing greatly. In particular, she is fascinated by faeries, and can be heard talking about them a little more than is usually considered appropriate.
This interest in faeries was incited by Madeleine’s mother who, one day, unwittingly implored her to ‘write something nice for a change, without blood, death, or war.” Channeling those childhood memories of flower-fairy sticker-books and Tinkerbell costumes, she suggested Madeleine write about ‘faeries or something’. A little research later, and this request birthed the first draft of The Sons of Thestian, a the subsequent start of The Harmatia Cycle, a series all about blood, death and war. Faeries, as it turns out – much to Madeleine’s delight – are actually pretty horrible.
When Madeleine isn’t writing or teaching, she enjoys composing music, drawing, and practising Washinkai Karate, for which she is a 1st Dan Black Belt. She currently splits her time between her apartment in Winchester and her family home in Horsham, where she lives in the middle of a dragon forest.
The Sons of Thestian
“Fae thinks I can see it. The future.”
“…I hope not.”
The Prince Jionathan is plagued by visions of death. With the King on his death-bed, and the tyrannical Queen in power, the Kingdom of Harmatia lies in peril.
Fleeing the city in fear of his life, Jionathan is shadowed by Rufus Merle, a young, secretive Magi tasked with bringing him home.
Now, with the help of a fearsome Sidhe warrior named Fae, they must traverse a dangerous faerie-wood together.
Against bandits, faeries and cursed priestesses, these unlikely friends travel a path fraught with danger, not least from the blood-thirsty Night Patrol and the dark conspiracy that shrouds them.
Blood of the Delphi
“Praise Harmatia, it is a city of gold and light. Praise it until it crumbles to dust.”
Rufus Merle is a wanted man. After twelve years on the run, raising the infant Prince Joshua in secret, the last of the Delphi line now stands in grave peril. Sick, friendless and out of places to hide, Rufus and Joshua are hunted by dangerous alchemists, a deranged assassin, and a powerful faerie goddess, who will do everything in her power to turn Rufus into a living weapon.
With the net closing around them, and the sparks of unrest and rebellion igniting across the Kingdom, Arlen Zachary is forced to question his own allegiance between the Crown, and the people he swore to protect. As the gods play their hands, and the ancient Sidhe prepare to settle a century old feud, Harmatia trembles under the tyrannical rule of a King, whose only commitment is to the dead.
